My Band Review:
I unintentionally walked into the sound of this band at house party
called,
Poonfest, in Tacoma on February 20, and ended up doing a
double take. An ethnic fest of sound came from their amps as they
jammed in the corner of the dining room. Their music sounded like
a fusion of folk, rock, and punk reflecting the great American stew. I
listened to the end of the set hoping to find whatever it was that
caused that unique blend, and I followed them as they played
shows this spring, but I just couldn't single it out.

Included in the
Fun Police line-up is front man, Kevin Schulz, who
plays guitar and is leader of the band. Brian Skitch plays drums and
Jacob Hayes plays electric bass guitar. Samuel Potts and Danny
Tallariti both play electric guitar and Holly Van Wagoner backs up the
vocals. But wait... there's more. In fact, there's so many musicians in
this band that there's no room for them all to play on stage.
Invariably one or two end up playing on the dance floor.

However it may just be these unique band members, playing
nontraditional rock instruments, that are adding the unique spice to
this platter. When they're all there, the band hosts two accordion
players, Michael Mann and Samuel Potts,a  violin player, Gordon,
and a percussionist, Jeff Millar.

Millar's African Djembe hand drumming and Latin Timbales add
ethnic rhythm and beats to the music.

This band gigs a lot. But they have an infrastructure in place that
supports their success which includes a promoter, a manager,
regular band meetings, and a friend who drives a van that taxis fans
to and from the shows.

Since the last show I attended on May 5th, I'm told the line-up has
changed with Gordon (violin) and Millar (percussion) leaving the
band and a new violinist coming in. Though I haven't heard the
band's new live sound, I wonder how this musical dish tastes with a
different mixture of seasonings.

I left that show covered in beer, sweat and cake!
