| as far as genetics, a Siamese rat is a rat that is completely one solid color (a self rat). It is also a rat with a pair of color genes - they can be any color, and it also has 'shading' genes that render its color to a "shade" or Siamese. The genes that make the color shade are recessive. The Siamese rat appears beige with a dark shading rising from the rump to the back. Points of this darker shading are also seen on the ears, nose, tail and feet and tail base. The genes that turn its color to shading are ch, ch. A Himalayan rat has inherited one Siamese gene, ch, and one albino gene, c. This rat appears white (like the albino), but dark shading is seen on the rump, tail, ears, nose and feet. The points of Siamese/Himalayan rats are the actual genetic color of the rat. So, a blue point Siamese rat is also a solid blue rat genetically and can be bred to blues to get more. There are mink, blue, black, chocolate and many other colors that show up as "points". At OFR, many self colored rats were bred into the Siamese lines to create rats with colored points. |
