| In 1999, Allie, my oldest daughter, cared for rats in her 3rd grade classroom. She asked if we could keep some. I agreed and we bought some. Not long after, we found a online group organizing a local fancy rat show. They called themselves RatsPacNW. Though peculiar, showing rats is not a new phenomenon. Domesticated fancy rats have been shown as creatures of curiosity in the USA and in Europe since the early 1900s. Maybe it was luck or maybe I had an eye for what a 'show rat' should look like, but most of our rats won many awards at the first RatsPacNW show. Later, I volunteered to become a judge for them and then became their first Vice President. In 2003, I started a 4H club for my two daughters, focusing on keeping indoor caged animals or 'pocket pets'. Later, I developed a curriculum for my state's 4H's Pocket Pets project. In 2003, my daughters and I began keeping miniature exhibition Call Ducks and Sebastopol Geese. We still breed domesticated fancy rats when our time allows. |
