| At Odd Fellows Rattery blue rats were introduced into many of our lines of huskies and Siamese. There are two common kinds of blue rats, Russian Blue and American Blue. These rats are genetically different. To be blue, both kinds must have two recessive blue genes (homozygous) to turn the coat blue - or gray, as some call it not in the hobby. The two genetically different kinds of blue will produce black rats if bred together. American blues tend to be very light powder or sky blue to dark slate blue. The genetic symbol is gg. Russian blue rats are usually very medium blue to dark Russian blue as seen in cats. The genetic sign is dd. In our husky Russian blue rats, the blue color is diluted, so they appear as light or lighter than American Blue rats. Platinum rats are genetically homozygous for blue (gg or dd) and homozygous for beige (rr). That is they inherited the genetics for both blue and beige color. Silver rats are genetically homozygous blue (gg or dd) and champagne (pp). |
